Mitch Evans wins GP3 Series in Barcelona

22 May 2011

BankLink-sponsored Mitch Evans has achieved motorsport glory with his recent GP3 Series victory in Barcelona.

A strong drive from Mitch gave MW Arden its first GP3 Series win in Barcelona. At only 16 years of age, this young New Zealander has captured media attention throughout New Zealand and the globe with his impressive victory.

Mitch showed exactly why team principal and Formula One driver Mark Webber has faith in his talent – holding his own for lights-to-flag win and offering MW Arden their first GP3 Series win, in front of James Calado and Tech 1's Aaro Vainio.

Mitch and his brother Simon have been sponsored by BankLink since 2008. And Mitch, along with Mark Webber, were recent special guests at the BankLink UK launch celebrations held at New Zealand House in London.

Mitch's dad, Owen Evans, has been sending regular updates to the team at BankLink, giving us a fascinating insight into the behind-the-scenes excitement.

According to Owen, "Being the youngest in a field of 30 and starting from pole at an F1 meeting was very daunting; probably not for Mitch but certainly for mum and dad...I can't tell you the feeling seeing him up there as the New Zealand anthem was being played at a Formula 1 meeting...when you win here it's just so big."

The race began with a great start by Mitch who held onto the lead at the front of the grid when the lights went out, despite pressure from the charging Tech 1 Racing pair of Andrea Caldarelli and Vainio.

As the laps counted down, Evans had pulled out a 2.5 second lead over Calado, while the Tech 1 duo were a further five seconds behind. With the chequered flag in sight, Caldarelli pushed Vainio hard all the way to the line for the final podium spot.

It was champagne and celebrations for Mitch and MW Arden as the young Kiwi crossed the finish line victorious.

Our congratulations to Mitch, his family and support team – what an amazing result, and we're thrilled to be part of the excitement!
